Sustainable Fashion - Op-shops Vs Fast Fashion
Share
With thrift shop prices on the rise and fast fashion chaper than ever, how do we create a balance between our wallets and the environment??
Recently, I took a trip to my local op-shop and tried to put an outfit together. All up for a dress, shoes and accessories it was nearly more than $40 in total, along with my time of around 30 minutes. Whereas I flipped own my laptop and under 15 minutes I had a complete outfit for $20 including shipping?!?! *AUD prices.
How can op-shops compete with that?
So, what are our options? How can we create a balance between the two? I understand that op-shops need to increase their prices due to the current economy and we also want to support them but at the same time we are conscious of our own coin. It's a dilemma for sure!
Here is my top tips for a more sustainable fashion journey..
- Spend the $$$ on the basics, the staples in your wardrobe. Think black and white tops with slacks or skirts that you can mix and match with.
- Op-shops - find the good quality brands that will last and be willing to spend a bit more on them.
- Fast fashion - same, buy the 'better quality' premium labels as these technically should be made of cotton and/or more quality materials. With less plastic! Synthetics = plastics, keep that in mind.
- Swap your clothing!
- Get together with your friends, local community, mum's groups etc and swap your clothing. It's a great way to refresh your wardrobe for nothing. It's a win win situation for all involved.
- Get creative and upcycle
- Perhaps a pair of pants are starting to see better days and/or you just never wear them. Upcycle them! An easy method is to cut them, make them shorter and you instantly have a 'new' pair of pants in your wardrobe.
- Online marketplaces such as Facebook and Depop
- The interest and use of these plateforms have increased drastically over the past few years. It is a great way to buy designer, vintage, retro and basics at a bargain price. My wallet will be definitely banning me from Depop real soon!
Overall, it's about creating a concious mindset, asking yourself..."Do I NEED that?", "Is it a WANT or NEED?". And if you are in need a new outfit or looking for something particular, find ways to shop secondhand first before purhcasing brand new.
Secondly, purchasing items from good quality, ethical brands is always preferred BUT I understand that their price range isn't always in some peoples budget. Therefore, make do, think before you buy and invest wisely were you can on YOUR terms and YOUR budget.
